journal excerpts..                                                                                 KELL-1988,JAN,7:oo a.m.                                                                                                 A thin layer of ice framed each pane of glass on this cold and drizzly morning in Tuscaloosa,Alabama. I, (then 13,) stepped onto the back deck of my parents split-level house by Lake Tuscaloosa to feed my dogs. After our usual 5 min morning playtime, I filled their trough's with Kibbles & Bits. I was closing the gate to their fence, and instead of trying to snout their way out, my dogs were facing southwest, toward the highway. A few moments later, I realized what had caught their attention. As a multiple stream of sirens go by, LOUD & FAST, up Higway 69 N. [Then unknowing, that this would become the opening score to the end of my childhood as I knew it. And of my innocence, in a sizable way.] It is also report card day.                                                          RIVERSIDE JUNIOR HIGH,8:oo a.m.                                                                              I opened the red, heavy metal, front door. I took two or three steps. The door slams behind me as Rodney suddenly appeared out-of-nowhere and says. 'Hey Scott, did you hear about Adam. "What", I said. 'He shot himself", Rodney replied. "Where", I asked? [Thinking of Tommy [Pallardy], whom, the year before, had accidentally shot his own toe off.]  'I don't know', he replied.   On the last step to the second floor, I glanced to my right. Courtney [Roberts] was sitting in front of the school counselor's desk. Her hands covered her pretty, youthful face as her long dark hair flowed down either side. If I had known, then, what really happened to [Adam] I would probably have sat down beside her. In retrospect, I probably should've.                                                                                                            I went to the wake. I opted out on the actual burial ceremony. The wake was dreadful-sad. His parents were crying, beside his open casket. Adam's mom was stroking his hair, while his father said 'Adam is a good boy", In a low, haunting, meloncholy tone that I will never forget.                                                      [Ten years later I would attend Seth Nelson's wake, also a suicide*, in the same spot at Sunset Funeral Home. The mood were completely different. Seth's mom was stoic*(*to be polite).]                                                                                                                [ His grave is located very close to Adam's. Afterwards, I got drunk with Hollie and Dandie at the Brass Monkey.]                                                          commandokell@hotmail.com
